| Summary |
This paper examines the use of elegies within Anglo-Saxon society, asking if they teach a lesson, are there similar themes, and if there are contrasting themes? Four elegies were studied, in translation, examining both "female"-voiced and "male"-voiced ones. It concludes that they do teach, that the limitations lead to quotes, which lead back to teachings; that they do not have similar paths, having different limitations for male and female, dichotomies being emotionally bound vs, free, physically free vs, constrained, and spiritually free vs. no reconciliation. The author concedes the limitations of not being able to read the Anglo-Saxon originals, examining only one version of each elegy in light of multiple translations and the issues of time constraints.
