Summary The purpose of this study is to examine the cause of injury and expected source of payment as it relates to social/psychological issues among patients in emergency departments (EDs) nationwide. Specific variables related to social issues will be examined in light of research that indicates having social workers in the emergency departments reduces overall costs. Through secondary data analysis, we will show how the lack of providing social service care in the EDs will increase costs of services. This data will provide important information as a way to address reducing costs within hospitals.
