Abstract This study was interested in determining whether or not significant change in the spatial association of land use types and natural hazards occurred between 1965 and 1974 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Specifically, this study focused on the identification of land use in Glenwood Springs in 1965 and 1974; the estimation of changes in the areal extent of various land use categories in non-hazard and hazard areas; and an attempt to identify trends between land use types and associated natural hazard areas. The basis for identifying land use and determining land use change in hazard and non- hazard areas was through the employment of the stratified, systematic, unaligned, sampling method on large scale (1:48.00) maps and aerial photographs. Based upon data generated by this research, it is clear that no great change in the way the land is used in Glenwood Springs occurred between 1965 and 1974, although modest amounts of;change did occur among several categories of use. In addition, as the city limits expanded, including additional areas of hazards, they were occupied by use types that did not significantly differ from those which existed before the city's expansion. Overall, no strong associations between land use and natural hazards were found, nor was there any clear-cut evidence of a trend away from hazard areas.
